Comprehensive care means recognizing the totality of the pain picture, treating the pain and also the source of the pain.
Chronic pain is difficult to treat because often it may come from more than one source. If you have been in pain for a long time, you can develop dysfunctional movement patterns to adapt to the discomfort. For example, you might develop a limp (the medical community calls this “an antalgic gait”) in response to radiating pain into your leg from a herniated lumbar disc. As a result, your tissue structure changes over time. The muscle tissue in your leg atrophies, the fascial tissue contracts, and unless there is an intervening force to change the movement pattern and the tissue structure, you cannot stop limping even if the original injury in your back has healed. Chronic pain can also cause depression, which changes your brain chemistry in such a way as to exacerbate your pain. A vicious cycle ensues. You are in pain, you get depressed, which leads to more pain, etc… Experience allows us to understand the varied components that contribute to your painful condition.
